How might we improve the experience of recovering from injuries? Through recovery we learn the limitations of our bodies and how they strengthen over time. Our physicians give guidance during the initial phase but it is up to us to make proper judgments about our condition. This project seeks to improve judgement and physical awareness though regular check-ins with yourself.
Overview
EXTEND is waiting room furniture designed with the patient in mind. The primary purpose is to promote the patients understanding of their current range of motion prior to their first consultation or physical therapy session.
Let me walk you through a patient's journey using the proposed furniture.
A patient who has suffered a sprained ankle enters the facility. They check in with the desk attendant. As this is the patient's first visit they are handed a tablet with a survey presented. The patient is asked to take a seat at one of the EXTEND chairs located within the waiting room. The survey walks the user through various motion tests, and asks the patient to record their range of mobility and the level of pain they are suffering from.
The patient is called into the therapy room and sits down with their provider. They explain their current condition with fresh attention having just checked-in at the EXTEND chair. When the patient returns for their next session they can again use the chair as a reference point for how their condition has changed.
A returning patient sits down onto the EXTEND chair while waiting for their appointment and places their feet on the lower bar, using it to test their range of motion. From this experience they are able to gain an assessment of their current mobility. The patient notes their current comfort and range.
